Bruce Straley responsible for a legendary franchise is making a new venture into game development. This inventive adventure, named Coven of the Chicken Foot, marks the first release from his new team, Wildflower Interactive, a project that will build on the legacy he helped create with a focus on reactive companion characters.
Introducing a Novel Adventure Game Concept
Shown for the first time at the 2025 Game Awards, Coven of the Chicken Foot functions as a narrative-driven exploration title. Players control a seasoned spellcaster, a protagonist who subverts conventional action-game archetypes. The foundational premise originated in a desire to deconstruct standard narrative tropes.
"Consider a scenario where you didn’t have the sword or shield? What if your character was physically limited? What if you’re a little old lady?" mused the creative lead. "This felt deeply interesting to question what makes a hero. Being a hero means persevering against problems, but it’s also about sacrifice, loyalty, determination, and persistence."
A Living, Learning Partner Inspired by Past Work
Although this project looks different visually, its core innovation evolves from of the work pioneered in The Last of Us. The entire project flowed from one pivotal question: "Is it possible to design Ellie even more reactive and adaptive to the player?"
The mysterious beast within this adventure transcends typical AI behavior. It is essentially a toddler that reacts with evolving behaviors. First, it explores with wonder, potentially leading to unexpected chaos. Subsequently, it enters a playful state. Ultimately, it watches and learns grasping cause and effect.
- For example: Should the beast observe the witch solving a puzzle, it grasps the physical act without knowing the purpose.
- Subsequently, it may attempt to collect various things and try slotting them, repeating what it saw.
- The 'why' is learned only when it accidentally solves a challenge, forming an organic connection.
Where Every Playthrough Differs
This complex system seeks to generate a deeply personal experience. The director emphasizes that Coven of the Chicken Foot will be a deliberate, discovery-focused adventure as opposed to a scripted, action-heavy path.
"Anytime I tried traditional three-act structure into this game, the excitement fell apart," Straley explained. "The true vitality of this relationship lies in the fact that each individual player will inevitably create personal anecdotes and outcomes than I will."
This focus on organic narrative born from interaction, the new title represents both a continuation and a drastic departure from Straley's legendary previous titles. The project is currently being built for Windows PC.
