According to figures released by Israel, at least 98 Palestinians have died during detention since October 2023. A human rights group operating from Israel has stated that the actual toll is probably considerably larger, because of numerous of disappeared people from Gaza.

Civilian Casualties

Confidential government records suggests that the majority of Palestinian detainees from Gaza who lost their lives in detention were non-combatants, based on a parallel examination.

In May of 2024, a defense forces registry following all fighters in Gaza, a roster of more than 47,000 listed people, documented merely 21 deaths in custody. By that point, 65 individuals from Palestine from Gaza had lost their lives in prison.

Custodial Environment

“Despite this mass number of fatalities, during 24 months no one has been detained,” the official said. “There exist no prosecutions over any fatality.

“As long as these policies continue to be enforced, each Palestinian individual in custody faces risk, also the physically well individuals, also the youth who have no medical issues.”

High-Profile Cases

Certain fatalities in detention have been widely reported, for instance a middle-aged hospital director who lost his life in prison after four months in custody.

A prisoner incarcerated with the individual testified that he was taken to the exercise area by guards just prior to his passing, clearly wounded and exposed from the hips downward. His corpse has not been repatriated to Gaza.

Documentation Problems

For 21 instances, mainly detainees from Gaza, analysts were not able to match the few details provided by officials to a death recorded by rights organisations, either through testimony from released detainees or reporting in the media.

The prisoners’ relatives might not have learned about their loved ones’ deaths either, as Israel has created obstacles to monitor Palestinian individuals it is detaining. Over half a year at the start of the war, the armed services would not provide to supply fundamental details about the whereabouts of many of people held in Gaza, effectively carrying out a practice of forced disappearance, per the advocacy organization.
