Study Indicates UK Government Officials Held Meetings With Fossil Fuel Lobbyists 500 Times During Opening Year of Power

According to new research, government ministers met with agents of the petroleum industry over 500 times during their first year in office – equivalent to two times each weekday.

Significant Increase Compared to Previous Administration

The research revealed that oil industry representatives were in attendance at 48% extra government meetings during the existing leadership's initial year compared to the year before.

Official Response

The government justified the engagements, claiming that ministers held meetings with a broad spectrum of representatives from "the energy industry, unions and civil society to drive forward our sustainable energy major project".

Rising Worries About Sector Pressure

Yet, the discoveries have raised concern among analysts about the extent of the petroleum industry's sway over ministers at a time when officials are striving to reduce costs and move to a more sustainable power framework.

Key Findings

The analysis, which is based on the ministerial published record of ministerial meetings, additionally revealed:

  • Officials at the Energy and Climate Department engaged with oil industry representatives 274 times, with sector representatives present at approximately one-fourth of sessions.

  • The secretary for energy and climate change held discussions with fossil fuel lobbyists 250 times – with a third of each discussion featuring sector representatives.

  • In the same period government representatives engaged with worker group agents 61 times.

  • Several leading fossil fuel companies met with ministers 100 times between them.

  • Fossil fuel lobbyists were present at almost every government meeting about the windfall tax, a temporary charge on the "exceptional earnings" of offshore energy corporations.

Official Responses

A Green party MP remarked: "Rather than listening to experts, residents affected by climate events, or parents anxious to secure a safe future for their children and grandchildren, this leadership is favoring corporate representatives and profits for major petroleum companies."

Ministerial Response

Officials maintained the findings were "inaccurate", saying many of the companies listed also had clean energy investments and that these were typically the focus of the conversations.

"Our primary objective is a equitable, organized and prosperous shift in the offshore region in compliance with our environmental and statutory requirements, and we are collaborating with the sector to preserve existing and upcoming populations of decent work."

Broader Context

Various prominent fossil fuel corporations have been censured for cutting their sustainable spending in the past few years amid a worldwide opposition against ecological initiatives.

An activist coordinator from an environmental law organization stated: "Officials pledged a people-focused leadership, but that shouldn't involve yielding to companies profiting out of environmental crisis. It's necessary to discontinue preferential treatment of climate-damaging entities and focus on the public."
