The speculation about this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The secret has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very unleashing of hell.
Not the Expected Sequel
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.
However, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team could be building a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the modern wave of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that subsequently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is full of specialized paths you can achieve with a distinct build with a personal story.
The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, sometimes in surprising fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you recalled something a non-human character said.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is these creative systems that allow people to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
